VALLERY BROWN

Vallery Brown completed an out- standing athletic career at Lincoln High School by earning seven varsity letters. In 1982 Vallery lettered in track. In 1983 she lettered in volleyball, basketball and track. Vallery completed her senior year by lettering in volleyball, basketball, and track. During her sophomore year Vallery was honored as a member of the 1982 Girls Track
State Champions at Lincoln High. She finished fifth at the state track meet in the 400-meter run. Vallery finished sixth in the 200-meter run at state and also ran a leg on the 1600-meter relay team that finished second. The Lincoln High 1600-meter relay team set a school record at the state track meet that still stands today, 4:00:80. Vallery was a steady performer in volleyball serving as a two year starter for the Links. In basketball Vallery developed into a high scoring guard who used her speed and quickness to rip through opposing defenses. Her best effort her junior year was 17 points against Norfolk. Vallery led the Links in scoring her senior year and also led the Links to the state tournament as they compiled an 18 - 2 record. Her best efforts her senior year were 16 points against Lincoln Southeast and 17 points against Lincoln East. Vallery was named
captain of the All-City Girls Basketball Team compiled by the Lincoln Journal-Star and was also named to the All-State Girls Basketball Team, First Team Class A.

FRED GARDNER

Deceased - Fred Gardner lettered twice in track, twice in football, and once in baseball while at Lincoln High. He was selected as a first team All-State end in football in 1922. Fred played on the Lincoln High football team that were crowned State Champions in 1922. In track, Fred had the best time in the college high hurdles - 16.8 seconds.

RICHARD GORDON

Richard Gordon lettered in swimming at Lincoln High in 1962, 1963 and 1964. In 1962 Richard was a member of the State Champion 200-yard freestyle relay team that set the state record for that event. The Lincoln High swimmers finished third at the state swim meet in 1962. Richard Gordon was considered one of the top promising sophomore swimmers by first-year coach Gene Cotter. In 1963 Richard was the 50-yard freestyle champion at the Inter-City League Meet and led the Links to a 4th
place finish at the state swim meet. In 1964 Richard was the state 50-yard freestyle champion recording a 23.3 time in the preliminaries.

GENE HRUZA

Gene Hruza received a varsity letter in football during the 1954-55 school year. The Links had a very successful season as they were crowned the Class A State Champions in 1954. Gene was selected to the Lincoln Journal-Star All-City football team at the guard position. He was also named to the Lincoln Journal- Star All-State football team as an offensive guard. Gene vividly remembers the Grand Island game as he intercepted a pass with one hand in the rain after applying stickum on his hands for the first time. He also remembers how much he enjoyed playing for his coaches, Bill Pfeiff and Ed Schwartzkopf. Gene continued his athletic career at Nebraska Wesleyan where he lettered two years in football. Gene is retired after working as an educator for 35 years. He was involved in starting a wrestling program at David City Public Schools and worked as the first educational coordinator at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. Gene has three children and six grandchildren.

LES "BUDDY" KING

Deceased - Buddy King lettered in football twice and basketball twice while competing for the Links. In 1938 he was selected All-State Honorable Mention in football at halfback. In 1939 Buddy was Selected All-State in football. He was a member of the 1938 and 1939 Lincoln High State Championship teams in football. Buddy was a member of the Lincoln High basketball team that finished as State-Runner Up in 1940.

STEVE MCKELVEY

Steve McKelvey received five varsity letters while competing for the Links. During the 1965-66 school year Steve lettered in football and baseball. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball during the 1966-67 school year. Steve received the Sertoma Club Award in 1966 and will always remember his three-run home run against Lincoln Northeast that won the City Championship in 1967. Steve continued his athletic career at Nebraska Wesleyan after graduating from Lincoln High. While at Wesleyan, he lettered in football and baseball all four years. Steve set several school passing records in football at Wesleyan and was named co-captain of the baseball team his senior year. He is currently a member of the Nebraska Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame, inducted in 1989. Steve serves as Executive Vice-President of the Nebraska Bankers Insurance and Services Company. In 1982, Steve was a co-founder of the Lincoln Babe Ruth Baseball Program, and continues to serve as President. He is married and the father of four children.

HAROLD MCMAHON

Deceased - Harold McMahon lettered three times in football and twice in track at Lincoln High. He was an All-State halfback in 1915 and played on the 1914 and 1915 State Championship football teams at Lincoln High. In track Harold was the 440-yard run State Champion in 1915 and was a member of the Lincoln High track team that was State Runner-Up in 1915.

DWIGHT MEIERHENRY

Dwight Meierhenry received varsity letters from Lincoln High in football in 1954 and in baseball in 1955 and 1956. He received All-State Honorable Mention honors in football as a center in 1954. Dwight was also a member of the Lincoln High National Honor Society. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve. Dwight has been very busy in his career as a dentist. He has served as President of the Clark County Dental Society and as a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry. Dwight has served as President of the Nevada State Dental Association and is on the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners.

GORDON PAINE

Gordon Paine received four varsity letters while competing for Lincoln High. He received three varsity letters in swimming and one varsity letter in track. In 1937 Gordon was the state 50-yard freestyle champion for the Links swim team. He also threw the discus for the Lincoln High track team.

DON RAYMOND

Deceased - Don Raymond lettered three years in basketball and three years in track at Lincoln High School. He was the 1904 State Long Jump Champion and the 1904 State Pole Vault Champion. He was a member of the 1902 and 1904 Lincoln High State Championship track teams.

DON SCANLON

Don Scanlon was a three-sport letterman while at Lincoln High School, lettering in football in 1949 and 1950, lettering in baseball in 1949, 1950, and 1951, and also lettering in wrestling in 1951. Don was elected to the National Honor Society at Lincoln High in 1949, 1950, and 1951. He was elected to the National Athletic Scholarship Society in 1949 and 1951. Don served the boys L- Club as President and also received the Lincoln Sertoma Club award in 1950. Don wrestled at 130 pounds and was the Missouri Valley champion in 1951. He finished second at the Nebraska State Wrestling Meet in 1951 at 130 pounds. Don was selected Honorable Mention All-State in football in 1950. In 1951 Don received the coveted Harry Sidney Dobbins Award. He attended the University of Nebraska on a wrestling scholarship after graduation from Lincoln High School. Don treasures his memories of playing for Coach Bill Pfeiff and still enjoys visiting with him about their experiences at Lincoln High. Don was married to Joline Bliss for thirty years and is the proud father of four children, three sons and one daughter, who all attended Lincoln High School. Don has six grandchildren and owns Scanlons Garage and Auto Repair.

THERESA SCHOONOVER - VIDLAK

Theresa Schoonover received six varsity letters while competing for Lincoln High. Theresa lettered in girls track in 1976, 1977, and 1978. She lettered in girls basketball in 1978 and boys cross country in 1976 and 1977 (no girls team). Theresa received the Lincoln Journal-Star All-City award for girls track in the mile and 880 in 1976, 1977, and 1978. She was named Honorable Mention on the Prep All-America Girls Athletic Squad for 1978 by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Theresa was elected to the Lincoln High School L-Club Roll of Honor in 1977 and 1978, and received the Sertoma Award in 1978. Theresa finished second in the 880 at the 1977 State Track Meet and won the mile at the State Track Meets in 1976, 1977, and 1978. She was the gold medal winner in the mile at the State Track Meet in 1977 and 1978. After graduation, Theresa ran track and cross-country at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. where she lettered in cross-country in 1978 and 1979, and in track in 1979. Theresa ran in the National AIAW Cross Country Meet in 1978 and 1979 finishing in the top 10 in her division both years. She completed the 1987 Lincoln Marathon and the 1988 Grandmas Marathon in Deluth, Minnesota. Theresa works at Pfizer in Lincoln and has her own Mary Kay business. She will always remember being the first girl to run on the boys cross-country team at Lincoln High and how it helped get a girls team started. She also recalls asking an official for his hat after she won the mile run at the 1977 State Track Meet. He gave her the hat. After defending her championship and winning the 1978 gold medal in the mile, the same official came up to her and offered his hat! Theresa is married and has two sons.

DEAN SELL

One of the athletes who made significant contributions to Lincoln High School in the mid-1950s was Dean Sell. Dean lettered in three sports at Lincoln High including three letters in track, two letters in football, and one in basketball. As a sophomore Dean was a member of the 1954 State Championship football team and ran on the State Champion two-mile relay team. In 1955 Dean was selected to the All-City football team as an end and received All-State honorable mention along with the Sertoma Club football award. As a senior in 1956 Dean was presented the prestigious Harry Sidney Dobbins award. After graduation from Lincoln High, Dean continued his athletic career at Nebraska Wesleyan where he played football and ran track from 1956 - 1960. He was a member of the mile relay team at Wesleyan that set the school record and was selected to the Lincoln Journal-Star and the Omaha World-Hearld All-Nebraska College Conference football teams in 1958 and 1959 at end. Dean was a teacher for 38 years and coached 9th grade football, basketball, and track. He also served as a high school football official for 28 years. Dean says his greatest memory of Lincoln High athletics was the come from behind victory over Omaha North in football after trailing 25-7 in the third quarter. He also is proud of the fact that, during his junior year in 1955, Lincoln High won 7 out of the 9 State Championships that were presented that year! Dean is married to wife Sharon and has one son, David, and one daughter, Cindy.

ALEX WALTER JR.

Alex Walter Jr. received three varsity letters while competing for Lincoln High. During the 1962-63 school year, Alex lettered in football basketball, and baseball. Alex was elected to the Lincoln Journal-Star All-City baseball team as an outfielder and the 1963 Lincoln High baseball team won the Class A State Champion- ship. Alex continued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln after graduation from Lincoln High and participated in baseball for four years. He lettered three years at Nebraska and was selected to the All Big-Eight team as an outfielder. Alex will always remember playing with Mick Zangari on the 1963 Lincoln High baseball team that won the State Championship. Alex served for three years in the United States Army obtaining the rank of Captain. He is a Vice-President and Senior Financial Counsultant with Merrill Lynch and has one daughter.

DENNIS WERTZ

Dennis Wertz received four varsity letters while attending Lincoln High School. During the 1962-63 school year he lettered in football and basketball. Dennis also lettered in football and basketball during the 1963-64 school year. Dennis was selected to the Lincoln Journal-Star All-City football team as a quarter- back after the 1963-64 season. He was also selected All-State Honorable Mention in football as a quarterback after the 1963-64 season. The Links finished the season ranked 8th in Class A.

MICK ZANGARI

Mick Zangari received a varstiy letter in baseball after completion of the 1963 season. He was selected to the Lincoln Journal-Star All-City baseball team in 1963 and was a member of the All-State Tournament Team selected in 1963. Mick received the Most Valuable Player Award from the Cornhusker Legion League in 1964 and was selected to the 1964 State of Nebraska All-Legion Team. The 1963 Links were State Champions in baseball and Mick remembers pitching a two-hitter against Omaha Bishop Ryan to win the state Championship at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. Mick was also a member of the Lincoln High National Honor Society, elected in 1963. After graduating from Lincoln High School Mick continued his athletic career at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he played baseball from 1964 to 1967. While at Nebraska, he received an NCAA post-graduate scholarship from Bob Devaney. Mick received a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1972 and a PhD from UNL in 1977. He is a Senior Managing Consultant for The Gallup Organization and serves on their Board of Directors. Mick is married and has five children.
