1982 GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TRACK TEAM

The 1982 Lincoln High Girls Track team were State Champions in both Class A and the All-Class comparisons. Led by their two Sunkist All-Americans, Carol Nunnally and Michelle Maxey, the Links came a long way from Wednesday night at practice the week of the state meet until being crowned STATE CHAMPIONS late Saturday afternoon.

Although the Links were picked to win, the media did not know that Carol had a bad case of bronchittis, Michelle pulled a hamstring at the district meet, and Gaylene Gaskins required stitches in the bottom of her foot from a fall in the shower. None of these three girls practiced the week of the state meet.

But as the state meet began on a cold, rainy Friday morning, the girls began performing like the champions they were. Carol won the 3200 meter run and Michelle and Vallery Brown qualified for the finals in both the 200 meter and 400 meter runs. Michelle also qualified for the 100-meter hurdle finals on Saturday.

Carol began the Saturday morning of the finals by winning the 800 meter run. Michelle then won the 100-meter hurdles. The last event of the morning session was the 400-meter run with Michelle finishing second and Vallery fifth. The first event of the afternoon session was the 1600-meter run with Carol winning the event. The next-to-last event was the 200-meter run with Michelle finishing second and Vallery sixth. At this point of the meet the Links led Omaha Central 59 - 53. The Links had to place at least third in the last event - the 1600-meter relay - to become STATE CHAMPIONS. The 1600-meter relay team of Carol Nunnally, Vallery Brown, Gaylene Gaskins, and Michelle Maxey placed second to Omaha Central with a time of 4:00:80 which is still the Lincoln High school record. Lincoln High was crowned the Class A and All-Class STATE CHAMPION by finishing with 67 points to 63 points for 4-time defending state champion Omaha Central. Team members included:

1956 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM

The 1956 baseball season began for Lincoln High School with only four returning letterwinners. Buford Grosscup was also beginning his first season as the varsity coach.

This 1956 baseball team had an outstanding season, winning 11 of 15 games. They were undefeated in city play going 5 - 0 against Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln Southeast. The 1956 baseball team was crowned the Lincoln Public Schools Champion and also won the state baseball tournament at the end of the season to be awarded the title STATE CHAMPIONS in baseball.

Coach Grosscup coached many of the team members on junior varsity as an assistant coach prior to the 1956 season. But the 1956 team made his first year as a varsity coach a great year and one that he will long remember.
