Lincoln Public Schools hosts first annual "Money Smart Week"

What was the number one issue for the American voter last week?  The economy.

This week, the Nebraska Financial Education Coalition is coordinating the first annual statewide event "Money Smart Week" from Nov. 10 - 14.  The collaboration includes schools, libraries, churches, Chambers of Commerce, banks, credit unions, non-profits and any entity that has vested interest in the financial education of Nebraskans.

An overview of "Money Smart Week" is online at www.moneysmartnebraska.org.   The "Event Calendar" includes a search by organization, including Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) high schools and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).

The main goal of "Money Smart Week" is to provide classes, events, programs, seminars and workshops to help students, families, business, employees, homeowners, etc. expand knowledge and improved financial literacy.

LPS events throughout the week include among others:
Lincoln Southeast High School: Wells Fargo
Get Smart about Credit
Lincoln Northeast High School: Public Service Announcements
Multimedia students are producing :30 PSAs about personal finance to be placed on the LNE Web site.
Lefler Middle School and Scott Middle School: UNL Students in Free Enterprise
UNL students will be teaching "Trade Around the World" to educate middle level
students about globalization, multi-national corporations, financial markets and monetary values.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Econ Day for Students
Special event for 200 high school juniors and seniors from across the state to introduce students to the study of economics at the UNL College of Business Administration.

According to Carol Andringa, LPS Curriculum Specialist, "LPS teaches personal finance skills to all students."  The statewide "Money Smart Week" enhances the LPS curriculum.
