Preparing for the ACT and SAT I

ACT                                                                            SAT

Dates:  June 10, 2006  (5/5/2006)                        May 6, 2006 (4/3/06)

                                                                                    June 3, 2006  (4/28/06)

Most schools accept either the ACT or SAT;  midwest schools prefer the ACT while those on the coasts generally prefer the SAT I.  Rarely does a student need both ACT and SAT I scores.

The basic fee for ACT is $29.00; the optional writing test fee is an additional $14.00.  The new SAT I, which includes a writing test costs $41.50.  Fee waivers are available for students who qualify.  Both fees include having your scores sent to 4 colleges.

Mail in registration information packets are available in the Counseling Center or register online.

AP information

Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses give you a head start on college while you are still in high school.  Taking the end-of-course AP exam sends a powerful message to colleges and universities that you’re ready for them, and can enable you to gain admission, college credit, and placement into advanced courses.

What is the difference between AP and other college-prep or honors courses?

--Many schools have created valuable honors courses for their students, but AP courses are the only ones actually designed by teams of college professors, who work alongside expert secondary school teachers.  Plus, college faculty participate in the scoring of the AP exam students take at the end of the course.  These exams compare students to their own college students, verifying mastery of the same level of curriculum.
